How to make a grunt plug – A Mutton Snapper favorite!

Updated: Dec 1, 2019

Some fish are particular and some will go after anything. The mutton snapper loves a good grunt plug.

Mutton and mangrove snapper (along with other great bottom fish) really go after a “grunt plug”. Having the right live bait at your bottom fishing spot can mean the difference between a great day fishing and a disappointing outing on the water.

MUTTON SNAPPER

  • Olive green color on back and upper sides, fading to a lighter belly

  • Chevron-shaped vomerine tooth patch

  • Anal fin pointed

  • Dark spot on side, just above lateral line

  • Blue stripe below eye, following contour of gill cover

  • Red hue on fins below the lateral line

For starters, we love using the Ahi Sobiki Bait Rod. It’s agile and can capture really good bait fish with ease. Once you spend a little time catching live bait, preferably “grunts” for the purpose of this tutorial, your ready to make a “plug” that mutton and mangrove snapper go crazy for.
